Traffic signal planned for 16/54 intersection

Published Thursday, March 04, 2010 in

 Local Times-Herald

By Sarah Fay Campbell

The Georgia Department of Transportation is currently designing an improvement to the intersection of Georgia Highway 16 and Highway 54.

"This is an intersection project we've been working on for quite a while," said Coweta County Administrator Theron Gay during Tuesday's meeting of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners.

"There is a lot of traffic, a lot of backup there," Gay said

The plans include the installation of a traffic signal, and "they really need to get the traffic signal approved in order to make the design work," Gay said.

GDOT officials have asked Coweta to apply for a signal so that it can be approved, Gay said. "It would go in conjunction with the plan the DOT is working on."

Sharpsburg Library
Seriously in need of repair/maintenance.
Sharpsburg Library was used as the third service to qualify for SPLOST bringing additional funds into town. Take a look at it....the two computers are not operational, air conditioner does not work, ivy is growing up the side of the building (can hardly see wall) and onto the roof. Ivy can work itself under shingles and then a leaking building. The grounds around the library look terrible as does the entrance and not to mention a wooden gate than is falling off the hinges. Money was left unused in funds that could have been used tor maintenance and repairs. Your Mayor and Council Members should be taking care of this.  It is a reflection on the town to have a municipal building in this run-down condition!

Sharpsburg Tree Committee
"fired" (short clip)

Rather unceremoniously, Mayor McElwanney "fired" the Sharpsburg Tree Committee which was established late Fall of 2007.  The successful Tree Committee has finished the following projects in 2008 & 2009:
  1. Two Arbor Day Celebrations
  2. Sharpsburg certified Tree City USA which qualified Sharpsburg for grants. 2008 & 2009
  3. Recognized at State event in Macon sponsored by the Georgia Forestry Commission. 2009
  4. Tree inventory and evaluation assisted by Georgia Forestry. 2008
  5. Proposed Chairman Matthews found a nursery to volunteer to donate all of the trees in downtown Sharpsburg Screetscapes project. 2008
  6. Meetings to develop work plan for 2008, 2009 and just completed a work plan for 2010. 2008 & 2009
  7. Suggestions to Sharpsburg Town Council for maintenance of old and newly planted trees..............
  8. 2009 Tree City USA designation.

NOT BAD FOR A

NON-EXISTANT COMMITTEE!

Sharpsburg Merchants Association Meeting

"New Beginnings"

The theme of the recent meeting of the Sharpsburg Merchants Association (SMA) was New Beginnings.  The purpose of the meeting was to initiate new merchants to the process of successfully sponsoring  the Sharpsburg Festival.

SMA President Eric Richards, a veteran of many Festivals, explained to the group the necessity of team work among all of the merchants to carry out the plan.  Richards also presented a checklist in order to give merchants an idea of the tasks required for  an event to be profitable for merchants but equally important a good experience for those attending the Festival.

This group is a real "power-house" so look for more and frequent events....and,  yes, there will the an Old Town Sharpsburg Festival next Spring and Fall.  Traditionally the Spring Festival is held the third full week-end in April, the Fall Festival the third week in September.

The group is hoping to involve the merchants along Highway 54 in these event and in any or all upcoming events.
